Sleep Apnea Treatment in Pasadena

What are oral sleep appliances?

Oral sleep appliances are an alternative to CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines for patients who have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Sleep apnea is a very common sleep condition that affects millions of Americans. In the short term, OSA causes poor quality sleep. And in the long term, it can contribute to heart attacks, strokes, and lots of other serious health conditions. If you suspect you have obstructive sleep apnea, contact Blue Door Dental to schedule an appointment with your Pasadena dentist right away. The sooner you get treatment, the sooner you can sleep peacefully once again.

Oral Mandibular Advancement Devices

Oral Mandibular Advancement Devices are a special type of night guard used in Oral Appliance Therapy (OSA). They are built to shift the jaw forward slightly when you sleep. This helps open up your airway, and prevents tissue from collapsing into your airway as you sleep.

This, in turn, prevents obstructive sleep apnea. If you have a mild-to-moderate case of OSA, OAT with an oral mandibular advancement device may be right for you. Schedule an appointment at Blue Door Dental in Pasadena, and Dr. Pacheco can discuss your case and whether or not you’re a good candidate for treatment with OSA.

Night Guards

Night guards look sort of like a retainer. They're built of strong plastic, and help protect your jaw and teeth from damage due to nighttime teeth grinding. However, they do not shift the position of your jaw, so night guards are not as effective for treating sleep apnea. Still, a traditional night guard may help with sleep apnea, especially if Dr. Pacheco suspects that nighttime grinding is a contributing factor to your apnea.

Why do I need a night guard?

You may need a traditional night guard if you grind your teeth at night, and you may need an oral mandibular advancement device if you have obstructive sleep apnea. The right option depends on your case, the severity of your apnea, and a few other factors.

Can I just buy an over-the-counter night guard?

Over-the-counter night guards can help with bruxism. But they are not as effective, wear out quickly, and could even cause your teeth to move if they don’t fit properly, leading to further oral health issues.

It’s also simply not possible to get an over-the-counter oral mandibular advancement device. These have to be custom-made by dentists to fit your jaw and your mouth, so there’s no way to get one off the shelf.

How long do night guards last?

This depends on whether or not you grind your teeth, and how heavily you grind your teeth. In most cases, though, your night guard or oral mandibular advancement device will last between 2-5 years.
